In the fall of 2000 I won a Palm IIIe from Nestle! So my introduction to computing has started.

Initially, we setup an e-mail account setup with the mail service at mail.yahoo.com. Also I became a member of the Canada Contest mailing list operated by Egroups.com. That too has been a help!

For the first month of using the hand held computer we transferred messages from my son's computer using Eurdora and the HotSync cable and software that was packaged with the Palm.

There had to be a better way to do this!

Well,... after surfing around a bit,... we came across information on how to connect the HotSync cable to an external modem. (It's at http://www.geocities.com/daveinfopage/palm_modem.html if you are interested.)

The work in getting the Palm connected is outlined as follows:

Life Continues!

Update - December 15th, 2000

One of my son's friends, Joseph O'Neil had a wonderful external Hayes Accura 14.4Kbps modem! (Years ago this item retailed for about $500.00.)

It is presently attached to the Palm. It's a welcome change. Joseph is certainly on the Christmas list this year!

On a footnote:
It seems like Hayes Corporation went into Chapter 11. Some of their products are still available, seemingly manufactured under license by the people at http://www.hayesmicro.com. Hopefully the firm that started the modem revolution in 1981 with the Smartmodem will again be a major contributor to the information super highway.

Incidentally, there is a $1 Canadian Coin sitting on the Palm's HotSync Craddle to give a sense of scale.

Feb 27th - As noted above: My son wrote a program that will let me use a PC's modem as the Palm's modem -- there's information regarding such here.
