How I Win Contests
The Preliminary Version |
Seriously.
If the rules say "Print" then "Print" -- don't write in longhand. If the rules state that entry forms should be written in BLOCK LETTERS (all CAPS) that means to "Print" using UPPERCASE letters only.
When the size is specified for a plain piece of paper entry,... use exactly that size. 3" x 5" means 3" x 5" -- not 3 inches and a bit x 5 inches or such. Be exact in measurement.
Also if the rules state "plain" don't use lined paper. Don't use coloured paper. Use totally white paper.
Actually some stationary, department and discount stores sell 3 x 5 inch pads of paper precut :)
If the rules state one entry per household then follow that rule. In this electronic age it's just too easy to check.
If the rules or entry form requests your "First Name" spell out your first name completely! Initials and short forms don't help.
Should the rules ask for a "Complete Name" fill in your complete name,... that's first name, middle name and surname.
I wouldn't have much use for a prize that was suited to a twelve year old kid. So I don't spend my time, energy, etc,... on those contests. A trip to Central America is a different story.... Thank-you Hershey
Aside from that I would sooner that a someone with a small child get that prize!
These phone calls seem to come out of the blue.
What works for me is to firmly and politely state that I would like to calm down first and ask that they call back the following business day.
This helps! By the following day I've found a pencil and paper and have it by the phone. (With an extra pencil in case of breakage.)
Check every page for both completeness and accuracy before returning them!
One of the neat gizmos suggested for entering contests is RoboForm
freely available from http://www.roboform.com.
Roboform works nicely with Internet Explorer and makes the completion of forms on-line trivial.
A Quick Click on the button marked "Fill Forms" and a lot of the work is done instantly.
Roboform isn't perfect. But it is a real time saver. Just give it's efforts a quick proof read and your entry should be good to go!
